November 23rd, 2020.- The much anticipated Top 100 wines of 2020 by Wine Enthusiast revealed the world’s best wines today, with Santa Rita’s Medalla Real Gold Medal 2017 achieving number 11 and reaching the top position for a Chilean wine.
Reviewed by editor Michael Schachner, Medalla Real Gold Medal 2017 obtained 92 points and was named Editor’s Choice. “Plum, berry and cassis aromas give this single-vineyard sibling of Medalla Real Gran Reserva a riper nose than its brother. A fruity palate is fleshy and bursting with plum, berry and chocolate flavors, while this Cabernet is medium in depth on the finish. Drink now–2024”, commented Schachner.
Sourced from Santa Rita’s Alto Jahuel Vineyards, in Maipo Alto, this Cabernet Sauvignon is made by winemaker Sebastián Labbé. “Medalla Real Gold Medal Cabernet Sauvignon seeks to show the riper side of the variety in the Maipo Valley. We push the ripeness with differentiated vineyard management techniques to obtain a lusher wine with black fruit and a friendlier style.”
Medalla Real Gold Medal was created to celebrate a milestone in the Chilean wine industry. Over 30 years ago, in 1987, before Maipo was a renowned wine valley, a bottle of Medalla Real Cabernet Sauvignon 1984 changed the history of Chile´s wine industry. This wine outscored 35 Cabernet, including strong French, Spanish, and Californian contenders to become the first Chilean wine to win the Paris Wine Olympics by Gault-Millau magazine
