Santa Rita celebrates World Environment Day with reforestation of native trees10 de June de 2019
Members of the winery took part in our conservation of biodiversity plan for the vineyards, planting 70 native trees in the Pirque estate.
Santiago, June 2019.- Pirque was the chosen location this year to continue the execution of the biodiversity conservation plan of Santa Rita, through the third native tree planting in the vineyards. This action aims to reconcile the agricultural production with the protection of the endemic flora and fauna of our Mediterranean ecosystem, one of the 34 worldwide hotspots for conservation.
This vineyard, located close by the Alto Jahuel estate, also suffered from the fires of the 2017 summer. Consequently, it became a priority area in Santa Rita’s efforts to restore the sclerophyllous forest that existed in the sector. Additionally as background, only 2% of the surface of this type of forest is under protection in some category of the National System of Protected Areas (SNASPE), so that responsibility for their care is even more necessary.
Collaborators of Santa Rita who are members of the Sustainability Committee with Internal Sustainability Ambassadors, together with the Environment Director of the Municipality of Pirque, Mr. Juan Fontecilla, as well as other representatives of companies that have joined Santa Rita in its sustainable efforts, took part in the initiative. Seventy native Quillay trees were planted in areas of the vineyard, a common evergreen species of the sclerophyllous forest, can reach 15 meters high and is highly tolerant to draughts.
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
This activity was also in line with the World Environment Day, set by the UN in 1974, commemoration of greater importance each year because of the growing pressure on natural resources that allow and sustain our consumption habits.
Other measures that are included in our Conservation and Protection of the Environment Plan in the vineyards, led by the Vitculture Direction, are the reduction in the pesticide use through an integrated pest and disease control plan that combines preventive, observing and intervention actions, preferring biological and mechanical control practices such as weed control with sheep.
At a national level, the Chilean wine industry is a pioneer in the country in terms of environmental care, taking a huge step through the establishment of the National Sustainability Code ten years ago. This tool allows measuring the practices and generating a management system for reducing and mitigating the impact on the environment, including areas of high ecological value in the vineyards.
