Casa Real 2023: the character of a challenging vintage and Alto Jahuel’s ability to preserve its identity over time
27 de August de 2026
The new vintage, defined by its intensity and structure, received the highest score in Jeb Dunnuck’s 2026 Chile Report, achieved the second-highest score in Vinous’ 2026 Chile Report, was named among Tim Atkin’s Wines of the Year, and ranked among Descorchados’ Top 10 Red Wines of the Year.
Casa Real, Viña Santa Rita’s flagship wine, presents its 2023 vintage through La Place de Bordeaux, offering a new expression of Alto Jahuel, one of the world’s most prestigious origins for Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 2022–2023 growing season was marked by temperatures above historical averages, particularly during February and March, accelerating grape ripening and bringing the harvest forward. In this context, meticulous selection and winemaking were essential to preserve the balance and freshness that distinguish Casa Real.
The result is a wine of remarkable intensity and structure, crafted from eight vineyard blocks and 25 micro-lots vinified separately, reflecting both the character of the season and the identity of Alto Jahuel.
“Every vintage is a new interpretation of this place. The 2023 vintage required us to work with extraordinary precision, fine-tuning decisions within very tight timeframes to preserve the identity of Casa Real. The result is a wine with deep fruit, firm tannins and an energy that reflects both the character of the season and the strength of this vineyard,” says winemaker Sebastián Labbé.
Casa Real was born more than three decades ago with a clear vision: to express the full potential of Alto Jahuel and demonstrate that Chile could produce wines capable of standing alongside the world’s great Cabernet Sauvignons. The wine comes from a historic 20-hectare vineyard planted in the 1970s and 1980s at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, featuring ungrafted massal selections of Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination of alluvial soils, altitude and Andean influence has shaped a distinctive origin renowned for producing wines of remarkable depth, freshness and ageing potential.
Casa Real 2023 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the Carneros Viejo and Población sectors in Alto Jahuel, Alto Maipo Valley. Following a manual harvest and rigorous double selection, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% of which were new, followed by an additional year of bottle ageing prior to release.
“After more than three decades, the ambition behind Casa Real remains the same: to reveal the identity of Alto Jahuel with the greatest possible precision. Today, we have a deeper understanding of this vineyard and greater confidence in allowing it to speak for itself. The result is a wine that naturally combines concentration, longevity and elegance,” explains Sebastián Labbé.
Even before its official release, Casa Real 2023 had already earned some of the most significant accolades from the international wine press. It received 98 points from Jeb Dunnuck, the highest score awarded in his 2026 Chile Report; 97 points from Vinous, its second-highest score ever from the publication; and 97 points in the 2026 Chile Report by Tim Atkin mw and Amanda Barnes mw, who selected it among their Wines of the Year. These accolades are joined by 98 points from Descorchados 2026, where Casa Real 2023 was named among the Top Red Wines of the Year.
With this new vintage, Casa Real reaffirms a legacy built over more than 35 years and further consolidates its place among the great Cabernet Sauvignons of Chile and the world.
