After receiving 97 points in the latest edition of the Descorchados guide with its 2024 vintage, Viña Santa Rita’s high-end wine once again stands out among the most awarded in the country.

Every November 24, Chile celebrates Carmenère Day, commemorating the moment when this variety—considered extinct in Bordeaux after the phylloxera crisis of the 19th century—was rediscovered in our country. In 1994, during a visit to Viña Carmen, French ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot identified that what was believed to be Merlot was, in fact, Carmenère. This discovery made it possible to recover a variety lost to the world and transform it into an emblem of Chilean winemaking.

Since then, Carmenère has shown remarkable expression across several Chilean terroirs, especially in Apalta and Colchagua, where it has reached its greatest potential.

In this anniversary, Viña Santa Rita celebrates an important milestone: Pewën de Apalta 2024 received 97 points from the Descorchados Guide and was once again named the Best Carmenère in Chile — now for the fifth time.

Made from a small block of dry-farmed vines planted in 1938, this wine embodies the elegance, depth, and maturity that only old vines can deliver.

Its label is inspired by the araucaria, a native and sacred Chilean tree found in Santa Rita’s century-old park — declared a National Monument — symbolizing identity and continuity. Pewën expresses the essence of Carmenère at Viña Santa Rita and represents a commitment to elevating this variety to the place it deserves among the great red wines of the world.

This recognition adds to several other distinctions: The Drinks Business recently awarded it the Master Medal for its 2023 vintage; it has been selected twice among Tim Atkin MW’s Wines of the Year, and was chosen as the Best Carmenère in Chile by Alistair Cooper MW for its 2022 vintage.
