Expert opinion

Santa Rita has about 550 hectares of vineyards in the Pumanque area, to the west of Colchagua, where a quarter of that area corresponds to cabernet franc. With a selection of these barracks this Floresta is produced, a franc focused on herbal and tobacco aromas, in a firm and tense body, but also with an accentuated maturity.

Winemaker's comment

Our Floresta Cabernet Franc is a deep ruby red wine. The nose has a delicate aromatic intensity with notes of red fruit, some spices and dried herbs. The wood is behind, delivering very softly a layer of aromas such as cedar and wet forest. It is a broad and long wine with firm tannins that are soft with a good grip delivering a long and fresh wine.

Vineyard Management

This wine comes from the upper part of our vineyard in Pumanque, one of the areas closest to the Colchagua coast. The vineyard was planted in 2002 with a VSP trellis system with a density of 4,600 pl. / ha. The red soils of granite origin are of medium depth and have good drainage and an ideal clay content.

The sea breezes have an important effect on cooling the vineyards achieving a slow maturity at the end of the season.


The grapes were hand picked into 12-kg boxes by the end of February and the majority was destemmed and placed in a tank with a bed of 5% whole clusters. Alcoholic fermentation took place spontaneously at 24º–25ºC, and the wine was pumped over daily with gentle manual punch downs. The wine spent a total of 26 days on its skins in a vertical press. The volume of press wine incorporated into the free-run wine was a key part of the skeleton of this wine. It was neither filtered nor fined before bottling.


This wine was aged for 14 months in French second and third use barrels. This is a medium concentration wine with a balanced aromatic intensity, with firm and elegant tannins.

Winemaker's comment

Deep purplish red in color with a bouquet of ripe black fruits accompanied by floral and herbal notes. Fresh on the firm palate, with tannins that lend backbone and enhance the freshness. Deep and persistent.


The vineyards are located in Pumanque sector of the Colchagua Valley, and were planted in 2005. This area is new to viticulture and has granitic clay soils developed from original volcanic material that are typical of the coastal mountains. They have very good permeability, a depth that varies between 80 and 120 cm, and a low pH that must be adjusted prior to planting and moderate potential. The local climate is influenced by the Pacific Ocean and attenuated by the Coastal Mountains, which moderates the temperature during the day while also preventing extreme drops during the night, for an average daily temperature oscillation of 14ºC. The accumulation of Degree Days is 1550..


The canopies are well illuminated with moderate growth and production limited to 6 tons/hectare. The vineyards are managed to stop growth prior to veraison, and the canopy is maintained active during ripening.


The grapes were hand picked into 10-kg boxes. The bunches were selected prior to destemming to eliminate extraneous organic matter. The uncrushed grapes underwent a 10-day cold soak for maximum color extraction. Alcoholic fermentation took place at 28ºC with controlled délestage (rack and return) for proper extraction. Once fermentation was complete, the new wine remained on its skins for a period for greater balance.


The wine aged during 14 months in new French oak barrels.

Highly influenced by the Coastal Mountain Range. Very dry and warm climate; dry summers and rainy winters. The average annual temperature is 14.9ºC (57ºF), and average annual precipitation is 595 mm.

Soil and surface

Volcanic, with a clay, clay loam and sandy texture.
